"@Mad_Science: Must be a Santa Cruz mountains thing.Us Sierra Mountain Folk seem to gravitate to beat to hell pickups,or at least garbage scow size 70's Suburbans...."
"I always do the opposite when my dog's with me,turn the car off,but leave the keys in it.Thankfully, his lack of thumbs keeps him from absconding with the cars."
"Damn, damn damn!Another missed opportunity from my misspent youth!I had a '72 Fleetwood originally owned by John Wayne (I thought it was bullshit, turns out it was true),but,it was a piece of shit, hell,we got it from the parking lot at Pick-Your-Part when the owner was driving it in to junk it,for 200 bucks.Drove the crap out of it though, even using the old girl to move most of my meager possessions from O.C."
"@devilock138: Correct me if I'm wrong, but was the C70 also know as the "Passport" in the late 70's/early 80's?My first ever vehicle, unlike the ubiquitous mopeds of the era, this was a real "motorcycle",well,at least it had to be registered as one, thus it was illegal to use the bike lanes like my moped friends could.Nothing like navigating the O.C."
"Oh,the memories all come flooding back reading these posts, especially the ones I'd forgotten.
This one came back to mind.I already had my first car,but just a permit,so off I go with my 18 year old friend in tow so I can legally drive to the Garden Grove DMV office to take the actual driving test,no problem, only got dinged for not checking my mirror when we first pulled out of the DMV lot, hell,I even set the parking brake when we pulled back in.
After getting my newly minted license Dan and I proceeded on a celebratory cruise all around Orange County, with the f&^%ing parking brake still set!Obviously, not all the way, though that '63 Falcon did seem a tad more sluggish than usual. My first act as a licensed driver.
I think my late father was a genius, not getting that sweet '67 4 speed Cougar I'd found in the same price range, but picked up my Falcon.I hated that decision at the time, but, frankly,I probably would killed myself or someone else with that Cougar, pretty hard for a 17 year old to get into too much mayhem with a car that's as old as him and powered with the smoking 170 C.I."
"We didn't have any of that fancy E-lec-tronical stuff when I was a kid,and we liked it!None of those fancy pants "seat belts" either, and we liked it!Riding in the "way back" of a Fairlane Squire inhaling carbon monoxide? We liked it!!
Only fun part of getting older, you can turn into Dana Carvey's "Grumpy Old Man" convincingly.....You can actually say "In my day....."
Actually in "my day" by the time I was about 8 both sisters were off to college or elsewhere and I was an "only child" for road trips, and our vehicles for said camping trips improved considerably.VW camper,Ford bubble top conversion van,and my personal favorite, the Toyota Chinook, that was one cool little rig.I could just sit there in the back with a book or watch the scenery go by as my folks were stuffed into that little 75 Toyota pickup cabin."
"@KVHnik: Yeesh, these days that might be considered child abuse! No built in DVD or Playstation? How will your children survive?!!?!Oh yeah, the same way the rest of us older folks did on family trips.....Seriously,bravo to you for allowing your kids to actually SEE something on a road trip,I applaud you."
